Q&A with Ahmed Ibrahim, AI Lead

Tell me a little bit about your background and what led you to work at Audere.

  • I was born in Egypt and lived in Cairo for over 30 years. I moved to the USA to pursue my PhD and later settled in Canada for work.

  • Growing up, my father encouraged me to read, and I spent my summers at the Cairo central library. It was there that I discovered the world of computers. With no computer or Internet access, I taught myself coding on paper for four years. Eventually, I got my first PC with Windows 3.11 where I started practicing programming on my computer.

  • I studied Computer Engineering at a university in Cairo and landed a job on the day I graduated. I also pursued a part-time Master's and PhD. Just before finishing my PhD, I received a partial grant to study in the USA, so I left my job and spent six years there studying and working.

  • After my time in the USA, I moved to Canada and worked in various full-time positions related to AI engineering before joining Audere.

In your own words, what are your core responsibilities/roles that you manage/do at Audere?

  • I lead the computer vision team at Audere, where I work alongside a team of talented engineers. My role involves coding computer vision algorithms and collaborating with other teams to enhance innovation and efficiency. I'm passionate about perfecting our algorithms and constantly improving our work.

What does your typical workday look like?

  • I typically begin my day by planning and attending a few meetings, such as stand-ups, team syncs, and planning sessions. The remainder of my day is devoted to coding computer vision algorithms.

What is your Why?

  • I've spent a significant part of my life in North Africa (Egypt), residing in a low-income neighborhood. I witnessed firsthand the suffering caused by outdated and sometimes nonexistent healthcare systems. I've always had a strong desire to assist and I'm thrilled about the potential impact Audere can make in enhancing healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

What is the most exciting project you've worked on at Audere?

  • Every project at Audere was really exciting! Seeing lots of people using the product I helped create feels amazing. Knowing that my code is making a positive impact in LMICs where help is needed is great.

What is your favorite thing about working at Audere?

  • The team is incredible! I'm constantly learning from each talented individual in this amazing group.

  • What I appreciate about Audere is how its mission aligns with my personal background. The transparency and trust within the organization are admirable as we work together to achieve this mission.

How do you spend your off-work hours?

  • In my free time, I enjoy assisting my kids with whatever they need, going for walks while listening to my favorite podcast, or watching my preferred TV shows. Occasionally, I meet up with friends to play chess or engage in online chess matches.

Any new hobbies during the pandemic?

  • While being at home, I began watching full classes online from top universities, which sparked my fascination with human psychology and brain function.

Share three facts that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you.

  • When I was young, I won a gold medal in a major youth chess tournament.

  • I was highly skilled as a soccer goalkeeper. Teams fought to have me join them.

  • I had the opportunity to program an actual Quantum computer, not just a simulator.

Keurig or drip coffee?

  • My fav machine at home is a 15 bar espresso machine. But I also have drip, Keurig, French press, and a Turkish coffee pot. I never bought Nespresso as I do not like its coffee.

If you could have a super-power what would it be?

  • Time travel. I would go back and have some serious talks with me.
